Características de crescimento vegetal

O medronheiro cresce lentamente até uma altura final de mais de 20 pés, mas espécimes dessa estatura são incomuns. Ele precisa de poda moderada lenta ao longo do tempo para desenvolver a forma de árvore, e cresce como um arbusto médio a grande quando mais jovem. Flores brancas perfumadas são pendentes e estreitamente em forma de sino, aparecendo nas pontas das ramificações. Frutas com textura irregular dão à árvore seu nome comum. Eles levam um ano para amadurecer, mudando de verde para amarelo, depois para laranja e, finalmente, vermelho brilhante - um belo contraste com as flores pálidas. Bagas maduras são comestíveis, mas não muito saborosas e às vezes são usadas em conservas. Em Portugal, na Grécia e na Sicília, a fruta é transformada num vinho de sabor forte.

"Croomei" tem flores rosa escuro aproximando-se de vermelho, que são maiores que o normal. "Oktoberfest" cresce 5 a 8 metros de altura e tem flores rosa escuras rosa. "Quercifolia" tem folhas irregularmente lobadas parecidas com folhas de carvalho, que podem ter veias vermelhas. "Integerrima" não tem os pequenos dentes ao longo das bordas das folhas.

Cultivo

O medronheiro cresce tanto no sol quanto na sombra parcial. Proteja mudas e plantas jovens de temperaturas frias e ventos frios. A planta desenvolve uma raiz profunda e torna-se tolerante à seca com o estabelecimento. Também é tolerante ao sal e pode ser usado em áreas costeiras. O medronheiro tolera uma variedade de tipos de solo desde que tenha boa drenagem. Se o Arbutus unedo ficar danificado devido ao frio excessivo, espere até que fique claro qual a madeira que ainda está viva antes de remover o tecido morto e danificado.
